This policy describes how FreeNotes ("we", "us") handles information when you use this website and its note-taking service (the "Service").

Information we collect

  • Account information. When you sign up, we store the username and email address you provide, along with a hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text.
  • Google sign-in information. If you use "Continue with Google", we receive your Google account email address and display name to create or sign in to your account. We do not receive or store your Google password, and we do not post anything to Google on your behalf.
  • Your notes. The content of notes you create is stored in our database so we can display them to you — and, if you choose to make a note public, to anyone with its link.
  • Email we send. We email you a welcome message when you sign up, and a one-time link when you request a password reset.
  • Basic technical data. Like most websites, we may process your IP address for security purposes such as rate limiting (for example, limiting repeated wrong password attempts, sign-ups, password resets, and abuse reports).

How we use information

  • To provide the Service: creating your account, saving and displaying your notes, and sending service emails.
  • To keep the Service secure: preventing automated abuse through human-verification questions and rate limiting.
  • To respond to abuse reports about shared notes.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use your notes for advertising or profiling.

Third-party services

The Service uses Google's sign-in service (Google OAuth) when you choose to sign in with Google. Your use of Google is also subject to Google's own privacy policy. Apart from that, the Service does not rely on third-party trackers, advertising networks, or analytics services.

Public notes

Notes are private by default. If you make a note public, anyone with the link can read it — search engines and other automated tools may also find and cache it. You can make a note private again at any time, and you can delete a note at any time.

Abuse reports

Anyone can report a shared note through our report form. Reports are sent to the site administrator and may include the reported link, the reason given, the reporter's optional email address, and their IP address (for rate limiting). Reports are used solely to review and, where needed, remove content that violates our Terms.

Deleting your data

You can delete individual notes at any time from your dashboard. If you would like your account and all associated data removed, contact us and we will delete your account, your notes, and your account information.

Data security

Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. Sessions are protected against session-fixation and cross-site request forgery attacks. Shared note content is filtered to remove potentially dangerous markup. Password reset links are single-use, expire after one hour, and are stored only as hashes.

That said, no online service can guarantee absolute security. Please do not use FreeNotes to store confidential, sensitive, financial, personal, or password information.

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
