How this works

FreeNotes keeps note-taking simple. Here's the whole flow, start to finish.

1. Create an account

Sign up with your name, email, and a password. That's it — no verification hoops, no credit card.

2. Write a note

From your dashboard, create a new note. Give it a title and write away. The editor supports rich formatting: headings, bold/italic/underline, bullet and numbered lists, quotes, code blocks, and links.

Your changes autosave as you write, and the editor shows the save status. You can also save immediately with the Save button or Ctrl/Cmd+S.

3. Keep it private, or share it

Every note starts private: only you can see it. To share one, open it in the editor and click Make public. You'll get a short link like https://your-site.com/n/AbC123xY that anyone can open — no account needed on their end.

  • Copy link puts the share URL on your clipboard.
  • Make private pulls the note from the public link at any time.

4. Invite collaborators

Use Share in the editor to invite people by email. Collaborators can edit the note after signing in with that address. Use the globe control to publish a public link that anyone can view, or make the note private again at any time.

5. Manage everything from your dashboard

Your dashboard lists all notes with their state at a glance:

  • 👥 a two-person icon means the note is public
  • 👤 a single-person icon means it's private

Switch between the card grid and a compact list view with the toggle at the top — your preference is remembered.

6. Keep writing offline

Open a note online once to make a local copy available on this device. The five most recently opened notes are kept in your browser and can be reopened from the offline page if your connection drops. Edits are saved locally and sync when you reconnect.

If the server copy changed while you were offline, FreeNotes asks before replacing it. Offline copies are stored unencrypted in your browser, so use this feature only on a device and browser profile you trust. See the Privacy Policy for details.

You can install FreeNotes from your browser’s install option when available. The installable app caches its static shell, but note content is kept separately in your browser’s local storage.

Is my stuff safe?

Passwords are stored only as secure hashes, sessions are protected against common web attacks, and shared note content is filtered before display. That said, no online service is perfect — please don't store confidential, sensitive, financial, or personal information in FreeNotes. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
